Experimental Investigation of In-homogeneity in Particle Distribution During the Processing of Metal Matrix Composites

M. Saravana Kumar et al.

Summary: Particle reinforced metal matrix composites can fulfill the needs of advanced engineering applications with tunable mechanical properties. Stir casting is a cost-effective method for preparation, but the complete investigation of vortex pressure and particle distribution remains a challenge. Optimization of parameters such as volume concentration, stirrer blade angle, impeller position, viscosity of melt, and holding time can achieve effective flow pattern and vortex pressure for homogenous particle distribution.

Investigation on the Effect of Stirring Process Parameters on the Dispersion of SiC Particles Inside Melting Crucible

Vishal R. Mehta et al.

Summary: Stirring based liquid metal processing is a widely explored process by researchers for the production of metal matrix composites (MMCs). The dispersion of reinforcement particles is the major challenge in this process, with important parameters including stirring speed, stirrer geometry, stirrer position, and stirring time. Investigating the significance and effect of these parameters on particle dispersion revealed the optimal conditions for uniform dispersion of SiC particles.

Interface formation and bonding control in high-volume-fraction (TiC+TiB2)/Al composites and their roles in enhancing properties

Hong-Yu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, (TiC+TiB2)/Al composites fabricated using the Al-Ti-B4C system showed significantly enhanced mechanical properties compared to TiC/Al composites, attributed to the improved interface bonding strength and energy dissipation of crack propagation. The reduction in reaction heat, improved crystallographic match, and enhanced adhesion work between ceramic particles and matrix in the (TiC+TiB2)/Al composites contributed to the formation of enhanced interfaces, providing a new idea for the design and control of interfaces in high-volume-fraction ceramic-metal composites.

Role of homogeneous distribution of SiC reinforcement on the characteristics of stir casted Al-SiC composites

M. Saravana Kumar et al.

Summary: The stir casting process is popular for creating particle reinforced metal matrix composites, but achieving a homogeneous distribution of reinforcement particles is challenging. This study investigated the synthesis of Al-SiC composite materials and the impact of SiC particle distribution on mechanical properties using a glycerol-water based model. The results showed that specific parameters such as viscosity, impeller position, stirring speed, and blade angle can affect the distribution of reinforcement particles.

Microstructural characteristics and mechanical behaviour of aluminium matrix composites reinforced with Si-based refractory compounds derived from rice husk

Adeolu Adesoji Adediran et al.

Summary: The study found that aluminium matrix composites reinforced with Si-based refractory compounds (SRC) derived from rice husk showed superior fire resistance and high elongation and hardness. Composites with lower toughness values were mainly in the A1250, B1250, and C1250 series, with porosity less than 4% and strain to fracture ranging from 24-38%. The XRD spectrum revealed higher intensity of SiC and the formation of intermetallic materials, while the tensile fracture surface of the composites displayed a ductile dimple-like structure with micro-cracks and voids at the interphase.
