A risk-based approach for managing hydraulic fracturing-induced seismicity

Ryan Schultz et al.

Summary: The study developed a risk-informed strategy for selecting red-light thresholds for immediate well shut-in during hydraulic fracturing operations in the Eagle Ford shale in southern Texas. By simulating impacts, it was found that impacts were greater in the northeast and smaller in the southwest of the area, driven by concentrations of population density. The method provides guidance for managing induced seismicity risks through traffic light protocols.

Probabilistic Forecasting of Hydraulic Fracturing-Induced Seismicity Using an Injection-Rate Driven ETAS Model

Simone Mancini et al.

Summary: The study assessed a catalog of microearthquakes observed during hydraulic fracturing at an unconventional shale gas site, finding that the modified ETAS model outperformed the standard model in forecasting high-seismicity periods. Additionally, by forecasting out-of-sample seismicity at the PNR-2 well using the average injection response observed at PNR-1z, better predictive skills were achieved.

Induced and triggered seismicity below the city of Strasbourg, France from November 2019 to January 2021

Jean Schmittbuhl et al.

Summary: A series of seismic events felt by the population of Strasbourg, France between November 2019 and January 2021 was found to possibly be related to deep geothermal activities, especially when earthquakes occurred near the geothermal wells. Through studies of seismic mechanisms and stress analysis, it was discovered that the seismic cluster location is in an unstable domain when the interaction of faults is weak.

Green, yellow, red, or out of the blue? An assessment of Traffic Light Schemes to mitigate the impact of hydraulic fracturing-induced seismicity

James P. Verdon et al.

Summary: This study discusses the implicit risk mitigation objectives of Traffic Light Schemes (TLSs) for hydraulic fracturing-induced seismicity, and finds that in most cases magnitude jumps are less than 2 units, one quarter of cases experience post-injection magnitude increases, and trailing event increases generally occur soon after injection.
