Long-term effects of anti-biofouling proton exchange membrane using silver nanoparticles and polydopamine on the performance of microbial electrolysis cells

Sung-Gwan Park et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the combined use of PDA and AgNP shows significantly higher MEC performance compared to single coating. When AgNPs were coated immediately after the PDA coating, they were more uniformly formed and less released, with proton transportability not sacrificed, resulting in a biofouling reduction of 80.74% compared to pristine PEM.

On-line monitoring of water quality with a floating microbial fuel cell biosensor: field test results

Ademola Adekunle et al.

Summary: Real-time biomonitoring using microbial fuel cell (MFC) based biosensors has been demonstrated in laboratory studies, with this study showing the long-term performance of an MFC based biosensor developed for monitoring metal-contaminated stream water quality in the field. The biosensors were able to detect temporal changes in water quality over a 2-month period, despite uncontrolled field conditions. The results suggest that the biosensor could effectively detect changes in overall water quality, even in field operations with potential challenges.
