The evolution of skin pigmentation-associated variation in West Eurasia

Dan Ju et al.

Summary: By analyzing ancient DNA from 1,158 individuals from West Eurasia over a 40,000-year period along with genome-wide association summary statistics from the UK Biobank, the study found a strong signal of directional selection on 170 skin pigmentation-associated variants in ancient West Eurasians. However, this signal was primarily driven by a limited number of large-effect variants.

Does the High Prevalence of Vitamin D Deficiency in African Americans Contribute to Health Disparities?

Bruce N. Ames et al.

Summary: African Americans have higher incidence and mortality rates for many health problems compared to European Americans, with a 15 to 20-fold higher prevalence of severe vitamin D deficiency. Dark skin blocks UVB radiation needed for vitamin D synthesis, exacerbating deficiency at high latitudes. Supplementation may improve health outcomes for individuals with dark skin.

Vitamin D Treatment Sequence Is Critical for Transcriptome Modulation of Immune Challenged Primary Human Cells

Henna-Riikka Malmberg et al.

Summary: This study found that 1,25(OH)(2)D-3 significantly modulates the functional consequences of immune challenges, but the effects largely depend on treatment sequence. The results suggest that a sufficient vitamin D status before an infection may be more important than vitamin D supplementation afterwards.
