The effects of IGF-1 and erythropoietin on apoptosis and telomerase activity in necrotizing enterocolitis model

Mete Akisu et al.

Summary: This study found that treatment with IGF-1 and EPO can reduce histological damage and apoptosis caused by H/R, increase telomerase activity, and enhance expression of antiapoptotic genes. These findings suggest that IGF-1 and EPO have protective effects in H/R-induced damage, potentially through regulating apoptosis and telomerase activity.

Gestational Age-Specific Complete Blood Count Signatures in Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Julia M. Pantalone et al.

Summary: This study found that neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) exhibit specific immune abnormalities based on gestational age, with lower gestational age infants showing a drop in monocytes and lymphocytes, and a rise in bands, while higher gestational age infants showed a decrease in neutrophil count. The complete blood count at diagnosis may be useful in identifying patients who will require surgery.

Supplemental Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 and Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Preterm Pigs

Summary: Supplemental rhIGF-1/BP-3 did not negatively affect any of the measured variables of clinical status or gut maturation in preterm pigs. Longer-term safety and efficacy of exogenous rhIGF-1/BP-3 to support maturation of the gut and other critical organs in preterm newborns remain to be investigated in both pigs and infants.
