Evaluation of the Cost-Effectiveness of Iron Formulations for the Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anaemia in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the UK

Aysegul Aksan et al.

Summary: In the UK setting, ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) may be the most effective intervention for IBD-associated iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), achieving a response rate of 81% compared to 74-75% with other intravenous iron formulations and 69% with oral iron. FCM was found to be more effective and less costly than ferric derisomaltose (FD) and iron sucrose (IS), and had an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of GBP 2045 per additional responder compared to oral iron sulfate.

Iron Formulations for the Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis in Switzerland

Ayseguel Aksan et al.

Summary: This study compared the cost-effectiveness of FCM versus IIM, IS, and OI for the treatment of IDA in Switzerland. FCM was found to be the most effective treatment option, with cost savings compared to IIM and IS, and improved clinical outcomes with additional costs compared to OI.

Results of the Seventh Scientific Workshop of ECCO: Precision Medicine in IBD-Prediction and Prevention of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Joana Torres et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease is a complex chronic disorder with no known cure, causing substantial burden to patients. New strategies for preventing the global increase of IBD are urgently needed. Data on the preclinical period preceding disease diagnosis may hold the key to disease triggers and early intervention, potentially leading to improved understanding, prediction and prevention of the disease.

The burden and management of anemia in Greek patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a retrospective, multicenter, observational study

Kalliopi Foteinogiannopoulou et al.

Summary: Anemia is a common extraintestinal manifestation of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) affecting negatively the patients' quality of life. Approximately 50% of IBD patients in Greek referral centers suffer from anemia, with 20% potentially developing recurrent/persistent anemia. Risk factors include extraintestinal manifestations, IBD duration, IBD related surgeries and hospitalizations. Most anemic IBD patients receive intravenous iron supplementation for treatment.

Iron Deficiency Anemia in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: What Do We Know?

Tamas Resal et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency anemia is a common extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease, significantly impacting patients' quality of life and mortality rate. Effective treatment requires addressing underlying pathological changes, and both oral and intravenous iron should be used more frequently.
