Early postoperative serum albumin levels as predictors of surgical outcomes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Tercio Guimaraes Reis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine which malnutrition diagnostic variables could predict postoperative complications in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The results showed that serum albumin measured on the first postoperative day was the only variable that significantly distinguished between patients with complications and those without complications.

Viral infections and the efficacy of PD-(L)1 inhibitors in virus-related cancers: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma

Ting Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with advanced head and neck squamous carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma could benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment, regardless of viral infection status. Patients with hepatitis B virus-associated hepatocellular carcinoma were more likely to benefit from ICI treatment compared to patients without viral infections.

Joanna Ostrowska et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the prevalence of malnutrition and nutritional risk factors in hospital wards across 25 European countries and found that the prevalence of malnutrition in Polish patients was slightly lower than in the European reference group. However, certain aspects of nutritional care process in Polish hospitals were found to be insufficient and require more attention.

Prevalence of malnutrition comparing NRS2002, MUST, and PG-SGA with the GLIM criteria in adults with cancer: A multi-center study

Zhihong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that NRS2002 was better correlated with the GLIM diagnostic criteria of malnutrition than MUST, while PG-SGA was too sensitive in detecting nutrition-related deteriorations, resulting in a lower positive predictive value in malnutrition diagnosis.

Maurizio Muscaritoli et al.

Summary: This practical guideline is based on the current scientific ESPEN guidelines on nutrition in cancer patients, providing 43 recommendations for the nutritional and metabolic management of patients with neoplastic diseases. GLIM vs ESPEN criteria for the diagnosis of early malnutrition in oncological outpatients

Marta Gascon-Ruiz et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the prevalence of malnutrition in outpatient cancer patients is higher when using the GLIM criteria rather than ESPEN criteria. GLIM criteria are more sensitive in diagnosing patients with high baseline BMI or MM compared to ESPEN criteria.

Agreement between the GLIM criteria and PG-SGA in a mixed patient population at a nutrition outpatient clinic

Kristin S. Rosnes et al.

Summary: The study compared the diagnosis of malnutrition using the GLIM criteria to the PG-SGA and found fair agreement between the two methods, with better agreement when initial screening was excluded. GLIM criteria had lower sensitivity but higher specificity in diagnosing malnutrition compared to the PG-SGA as the gold standard.

The Use of Visceral Proteins as Nutrition Markers: An ASPEN Position Paper

David C. Evans et al.

Summary: Serum albumin and prealbumin are not reliable markers for nutrition assessment as they mainly reflect inflammation in the body instead of nutritional status or protein-energy malnutrition. Inflammation in critical or chronic illnesses leads to a redistribution of serum proteins and lower concentrations of albumin and prealbumin, making them better indicators of patient risk for adverse outcomes.
