Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders and the Microbiome-What Is the Best Strategy for Moving Microbiome-based Therapies for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders into the Clinic?

Ruben A. T. Mars et al.

Summary: Human studies have shown links between the intestinal microbiome and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), but there is often a gap between human and animal research, hindering the translation of microbiome findings to clinical practice. Changes in microbial function reflected in the fecal metabolome may be more precise indicators of disease subtype-specific mechanisms. Further longitudinal studies in both humans and animals are needed to effectively determine microbial functions that can address specific pathophysiological processes in FGIDs.

The intestinal neuro-immune axis: crosstalk between neurons, immune cells, and microbes

Amanda Jacobson et al.

Summary: The gastrointestinal tract is regulated by a dense network of interconnected neurons that coordinate important physiological functions. Studies have shown complex interactions between gut neurons, immune cells, and epithelial cells, highlighting their roles in immune regulation and intestinal function. Integration of intestinal microbiota into the neuro-immune axis through tuning neuronal and immune interactions may offer new therapeutic targets for inflammatory diseases.
