Low carbon cementitious materials: Sodium sulfate activated ultrafine slag/fly ash blends at ambient temperature

Junjie Zhang et al.

Summary: Na2SO4 (NS)-activated slag as an alkali-activated binder showed slower strength development but lower CO2 emissions potential compared to NaOH and water glass. By using ultra-fine slag and fly ash (FA), the compressive strength was improved while reducing CO2 emissions. The study indicated a promising low carbon alkali-activated binder.

The influence of the SiO2/Na2O ratio on the low calcium alkali activated binder based on fly ash

V. Bocullo et al.

Summary: The SiO2/Na2O ratio has a significant impact on the compressive strength of alkali activated binders (AAB). Too low ratio leads to rapid sodium carbonation, while too high ratio reduces the sodium content necessary for alkali activation, resulting in lower compressive strength. Furthermore, a higher SiO2/Na2O ratio also decreases the crystallinity of hydroxy-sodalite.

Adsorption Performance of Modified Fly Ash for Copper Ion Removal from Aqueous Solution

Gabriela Buema et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the fly ash from the CET II Holboca power plant in Romania can be utilized for producing new materials applicable for environmental decontamination. Through various characterization and adsorption experiments, it was found that the fly ash treated with NaOH has a high adsorption capacity for copper ions, and the adsorption process follows a chemisorption mechanism.

Insights to the sulfate resistance and microstructures of alkali-activated metakaolin/slag pastes

Huajun Zhu et al.

Summary: Substitution of metakaolin with slag increased precursor reactivity, leading to higher reaction rates and improved mechanical properties and sulfate resistance in alkaliactivated cement. The development of gel phases and pore structures, as well as the generation of C-A-S-H, contribute to the better sulfate resistance and more compact microstructure observed with higher slag content. An optimal replacement level of 30 wt% metakaolin was identified for improved sulfate resistance and prevention of potential ettringite damage in practical applications.

Engineering properties of alkali activated materials reactive powder concrete

Yousef R. Alharbi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the performance of RPC developed by AAM under different curing conditions, with findings showing that microwave curing has a good impact on AAM mixes with total cement replacement, while steam curing enhances the behaviour of RPC based cement. Additionally, when MK was used in RPC based AAM, a 30% loss in strength was observed compared to slag, and microwave curing led to a reduction in capillary pores. Moreover, the addition of extra water to improve workability weakened the geopolymerization process and increased microstructure porosity.

Removal of Toxic Copper Ion from Aqueous Media by Adsorption on Fly Ash-Derived Zeolites: Kinetic and Equilibrium Studies

Gabriela Buema et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption capacity of a material obtained from fly ash treated with sodium hydroxide as a novel adsorbent for removing toxic Cu2+ ions from aqueous media. The results showed that the Langmuir model fitted the data and the maximum copper adsorption capacity was 53.5 mg/g. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the mechanism of adsorption was chemisorption, indicating high efficiency in copper ion removal.

Zhipu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of silicate structure on the mechanical properties of hardened pastes by changing the n(SiO2)/n(Na2O) ratio in waterglass. Results showed that different silicate structures had different effects on the geopolymerization speed and compressive strength of alkali-activated materials.

Performance assessment of five adsorbents based on fly ash for removal of cadmium ions

Gabriela Buema et al.

Summary: The study investigated five adsorbents based on NaOH-treated fly ash for the adsorption of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of the new adsorbents improved significantly after NaOH treatment, with shorter equilibrium time. The adsorption process followed the pseudo second-order model, and the effectiveness of the adsorbents was evaluated using the TCLP procedure, recommending their potential use for wastewater treatment.

Effect of Particle Size of Quartz Sand Filler on Microstructure and Strength of Alkali-Activated Slag-Based Materials

N. N. Klimenko et al.

Summary: The interaction between quartz sand and water glass was studied by varying the Si/Na molar ratio and quartz sand particle size, revealing the influence of these factors on the mechanical properties of the synthesized materials. The degree of dispersibility and amorphization of quartz sand played a crucial role in determining the bonding mechanism between water glass solution and quartz sand. Finely ground quartz sand led to a dissolution-precipitation reaction, resulting in stronger consolidation of the granular system compared to using coarse ordinary quartz sand. The increase in Si/Na molar ratio in water glass solution with finely ground quartz sand corresponded to an increase in amorphous quartz content and significantly enhanced compressive strength in alkali-activated slag-based materials.
