Effect of strain rate and corrosion products on pre-exposure stress corrosion cracking in the ZK60 magnesium alloy

Evgeniy Merson et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing strain rate after pre-exposure treatment can enhance the ductility of the ZK60 alloy. Contrary to conventional beliefs, the mechanism of PESCC is associated with a corrosion products layer containing sealed corrosive media, rather than diffusible hydrogen.

Summary: This study specifically investigated the bio-corrosion behaviors of AZ31B magnesium alloy under alternating cyclic dynamic loads with different low frequencies. The results showed that the degradation performances under external dynamic stressed conditions were more severe, and the corrosion rates increased with the rise of cyclic frequency.

Vacuum retarding and air accelerating effect on the high-cycle and very-high-cycle fatigue behavior of a ZK60 magnesium alloy

Yongjie Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the plastic deformation mechanism at the crack initiation site remains the same in different loading environments, but the fatigue life and failure mode vary. Internal failure dominates in a vacuum loading environment with longer fatigue life, while surface failure dominates in an air loading environment, influenced by the competition between surface air acceleration effect and critical grains. Fatigue life is mainly influenced by the internal vacuum retarding effect and surface air accelerating effect.

Inhibiting stress corrosion cracking by removing corrosion products from the Mg-Zn-Zr alloy pre-exposed to corrosion solutions

Evgeniy Merson et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) in magnesium and its alloys during slow-strain rate tensile testing in air is related to hydrogen embrittlement and the corrosion product layer. However, the complete recovery of mechanical response and elimination of harmful embrittling features can be achieved by removing corrosion products from the surface of pre-exposed specimens, which challenges the common viewpoint that SCC mechanism is solely governed by diffusible hydrogen.

On the role of pre-exposure time and corrosion products in stress-corrosion cracking of ZK60 and AZ31 magnesium alloys

Evgeniy Merson et al.

Summary: The pre-exposure of magnesium alloys to corrosive media leads to embrittlement, primarily due to the combined effect of corrosion damage and brittle cracking mechanism. Deposition and increasing amount of corrosion products during pre-exposure play a key role in initiating brittle cracking, which can be fully inhibited by removing these corrosion products from the specimen surface. The irreversible loss in ductility and strength caused by corrosion damage becomes more pronounced with longer pre-exposure time. No evidence was found for the increasing concentration of diffusible hydrogen in magnesium alloys with prolonged pre-exposure.
