Summary: This article investigates the design of a 250 kW permanent magnet machine for aircraft propulsion, aiming for high specific power, high efficiency, and low thermal resistance direct-cooling design. The key enabling technology proposed is additively manufactured hollow conductors integrated with heat pipes. Parametric finite-element analysis and tradeoff studies on winding configurations and geometrical parameters were conducted to highlight their impact on specific power, winding ac losses, and efficiency.
