Improvement in fire-retardant properties of polypropylene filled with intumescent flame retardants, using flower-like nickel cobaltate as synergist

Wenjing Zhao et al.

Summary: The addition of three-dimensional flower-like nickel cobaltate (NiCo2O4) into polypropylene (PP) with intumescent flame retardant (IFR) showed synergistic effects, significantly enhancing the flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and forming a continuous stable char layer at high temperatures. The presence of NiCo2O4 also improved the water resistance and had only a slight negative effect on tensile strength of the PP composite.

Balancing the toughness and strength in polypropylene composites

Kamyar Shirvanimoghaddam et al.

Summary: Fracture toughness is a key performance indicator when selecting plastics for critical structural applications, and enhancing fracture toughness by incorporating elastomers into plastics is a effective strategy. However, the toughening mechanism in polypropylene composites requires careful study due to the presence of a second phase and the importance of interfacial bonding. This paper provides an overview of toughening mechanism in thermoplastic composites and discusses the factors influencing the efficiency of toughened polymer composites.

Experimental and computational study of zinc coordinated 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid self-assembled film on steel surface

Deng Wang et al.

Summary: Zn-HEDP film was successfully fabricated on steel surface through coordination self-assembly method, showing good corrosion resistance. The optimal preparation conditions were zinc concentration of 10 mmol/L, pH value of 5.0, and assembly time of 30 min. The coordination between zinc ions and HEDP effectively increased the binding energy with Q235 steel, preventing corrosion.
