Insights into natural and carbonation curing of ancient Chinese rammed earth mixed with brown sugar

Yi Luo et al.

Summary: The strength and water resistance of rammed earth are influenced by material composition and curing conditions. This study found that carbonation curing and lime content have a positive impact on the strength of rammed earth, while clay content has a negative effect on water resistance. The addition of brown sugar as a water-reducing admixture may have detrimental effects, but a suitable dosage will not cause adverse reactions.

Creep characteristics and constitutive model of bio-based concrete in aqueous environment

Fan Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of loading method, axial force, and water pressure on the long-term creep characteristics of bio-based apricot shell concrete, showing that water pressure significantly affects creep properties. The increase of axial force leads to higher creep strain and creep rate.

Experimental assessment of freezing-thawing resistance of rammed earth buildings

Lassana Bakary Traore et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the frost resistance of earthen buildings in wet and cold regions. Experimental results show that surface scaling is a major factor affecting all samples, while cement stabilization can enhance the frost resistance of earthen buildings. Different freezing-thawing cycles were conducted to analyze water absorption and frost resistance at early stages, providing insights for developing a more suitable testing method for the freezing-thawing resistance of earthen building materials.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the material characterization of the most recognizable section of the Seville City Wall, discovering that capillary humidity and salt transport and crystallization are the main causes of deterioration. The results of the study provide a solid criterion for restoration proposals, making an interesting reference for similar interventions on rammed earth military structures.

Fracture behavior of rammed earth in historic buildings

Ignacio Arto et al.

Summary: Ramned earth, as a construction system for traditional buildings, still lacks sufficient research on its fracture behavior, with even fewer studies considering lime as a stabilizer. This study measured the density, ultrasonic pulse velocity, fracture energy, and tensile strength of rammed earth specimens with different soil:lime dosages, and found relationships between these parameters and the dosages used. It was also found that the fracture behavior of rammed earth can be considered similar to that of mass concrete from a qualitative perspective.
