Sustainable Photopolymers in 3D Printing: A Review on Biobased, Biodegradable, and Recyclable Alternatives

Vincent S. D. Voet et al.

Summary: The global market for 3D printing materials has grown rapidly in the past decade, with photopolymers dominating sales. However, the lack of sustainable resins that can compete with commercial materials in vat photopolymerization remains a challenge. Developing green alternatives is crucial for reducing the environmental impact of additive manufacturing.

Cationic UV-Curing of Epoxidized Biobased Resins

Camilla Noe et al.

Summary: Epoxy resins are crucial for producing thermosets due to their superior properties, but the search for biobased alternatives is growing due to environmental concerns and depletion of petroleum resources. Among curing techniques, UV-curing is considered the most environmentally friendly option. This review focuses on bio-based cationic UV-curable epoxy resins, highlighting their sources and applications.

Synthesis of three kinds of multi-armed cardanol-based acrylic resins based on different routes for UV/EB-cured coatings

Jingcheng Liu et al.

Summary: Three kinds of multi-armed cardanol-based acrylic resins were synthesized for the fabrication of UV/EB-cured coatings. The resins showed high hardness and good adhesion properties. EBcured coatings outperformed UV-cured coatings by not requiring photo-initiators.

Phosphonated and methacrylated biobased cardanol monomer: Synthesis, characterization and application

W. S. Jennifer Li et al.

Summary: Phosphonic groups were added to cardanol to create effective adhesion promoters for different surfaces, leading to improved adhesion effectiveness of coatings. The development of a phosphonic latex through miniemulsion radical copolymerization successfully increased the hydrophobic properties of the coatings.

Nanocellulose from Unbleached Hemp Fibers as a Filler for Biobased Photocured Composites with Epoxidized Cardanol

Sara Dalle Vacche et al.

Summary: Bio-based composites were produced using raw materials derived from biomass waste, such as an epoxy resin from cardanol and nanocellulose from unbleached hemp fibers. Despite challenges like high fiber content and UV absorbance, a successful quantitative conversion was achieved. The composites remained flexible, hydrophobic, water resistant, transparent with a yellow/brown hue, and rubbery at room temperature after curing.
