Bashar S. Mohammed et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of crumb rubber and PVA fibers on rubberized engineered cementitious composites, showing that the inclusion of crumb rubber decreases compressive strength and elastic modulus while increasing Poisson's ratio and drying shrinkage. Optimization results suggest that the best mixture combines 1.92% crumb rubber with 1.86% PVA fibers, with a variation of less than 5% between predicted and validation results.

Summary: The study investigates a novel approach to improve the mechanical strength of cementitious composites by pretreating crumb rubber with graphene oxide. Results show that higher GO concentration leads to better bonding and reactivity, resulting in significant improvements in compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths. Response surface models have been developed to predict mechanical strengths with high accuracy, and multi-objective optimization has been successfully validated experimentally.

Effect of crumb rubber on the punching shear behaviour of reinforced concrete slabs with openings

Mahmoud Elsayed et al.

Summary: The study found that incorporating crumb rubber into concrete has a negative effect on its mechanical properties, although using up to 5% CR can slightly reduce compressive, tensile, and flexural strength of rubberised concrete. The punching shear strength and stiffness of rubberised concrete slabs decrease with increasing CR, but toughness increases with 5% CR content and then declines. Additionally, openings in flat slabs adjacent to columns result in a significant reduction in punching shear strength, with the strength decreasing as the opening size increases. The accuracy of design code equations in predicting the punching strength of rubberised concrete slabs with or without openings is evaluated and compared with experimental results.

Suitability of Blending Rice Husk Ash and Calcined Clay for the Production of Self-Compacting Concrete: A Review

Abubakar Muhammad et al.

Summary: Increasing the amount of finer constituents in the mixture can improve self-compacting properties but also increase cement consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Pozzolanic materials like rice husk ash and calcined highly kaolinitic clays are gaining attention as supplementary cementitious materials for self-compacting concrete, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Further research is needed to explore the potential of low-kaolinitic calcined clays and rice husk ash blend in self-compacting concrete for various countries in Africa.
