Effect of transitional aluminas on Portland cement hydration, phase assemblage and the correlation to ASR preventing effectiveness

Jin Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of transitional aluminas on hydration kinetics, phase assemblage of Portland cement, and their effectiveness in preventing alkali-silica reaction (ASR). Lower annealing temperatures of transitional aluminas have significant effects on hydration kinetics and phase assemblage, while higher annealing temperatures result in transitional aluminas mainly acting as fillers.

Production of antibacterial cement composites containing ZnO/lignin and ZnO-SiO2/lignin hybrid admixtures

Izabela Klapiszewska et al.

Summary: In this study, inorganic-organic systems based on ZnO or ZnO-SiO2 and lignin were used for the first time to counteract the biodeterioration of cement composites. The systems showed good stability and lignin was able to be uniformly dispersed in the cement matrix. Zinc oxide was found to retard the hydration of the cement binder and inhibit bacterial and fungal pathogens, with silica balancing out the adverse effects to some extent.

Bond behavior between the nano-Al2O3-water-glass-modified magnesium-phosphate-cement mortar and steel fiber

Hu Feng et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the impact of nano-Al2O3 substitution rate, water glass substitution rate, and immersion time on the bond behavior between magnesium phosphate cement mortar and steel fiber. The results indicated that 4% and 6% NA substitution rates, as well as 1% and 2% WG substitution rates, significantly improved the bond behavior, with 6% NA substitution rate showing denser micro-structure and better micro-mechanical properties in the fibermatrix interface transition zone. Additionally, the water stability of the interface gradually decreased with increasing immersion time.

Mechanism of nano-silica to enhance the robustness and durability of concrete in low air pressure for sustainable civil infrastructures

Rui He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of nano-silica (NS) in enhancing the robustness and durability of concrete in low air pressure areas, demonstrating that NS can improve the flexural strength and frost resistance of concrete by densifying the hydration products of air pore walls. The adsorption of NS at air bubble shells entrained by air-entraining agents influences the pore size distribution, leading to an optimized concrete performance. The findings deepen understanding of the fundamental mechanism of NS in concrete in plateau areas and promote its application in creating sustainable built environments.

Evaluation of the nano silica and nano waste materials on the corrosion protection of high strength steel embedded in ultra-high performance concrete

Sahar A. Mostafa et al.

Summary: High strength steel embedded in ultra-high performance concrete immersed in 3.5% NaCl solution showed higher corrosion rates under accelerated conditions compared to normal conditions. The presence of nano materials decreased anodic and cathodic overpotentials, shifted open circuit potential and corrosion potential to more noble values, and reduced corrosion current densities. Additionally, these materials enhanced concrete bulk resistance and charge transfer resistance at the steel/concrete interface, effectively impeding the corrosion process.

Soudabeh Dezhampanah et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the properties of concrete specimens made with magnetite aggregate Fe3O4 containing 0.6% of polypropylene fiber (PPF) and varying percentages of nano titanium dioxide (nano TiO2). Increasing the nano TiO2 content led to changes in compressive strength, UPV, impact resistance, and gamma-ray shielding properties, with improvements initially and subsequent decreases. This included increased linear attenuation coefficients and reduced ray transmissions, indicating enhanced radiation shielding capabilities with higher nano TiO2 content.

Improvement in compressive strength of Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber (SBR) modified mortars by using powder form and nanoparticles

Maria Idrees et al.

Summary: This study aimed to find solutions to the drawbacks of liquid SBR polymer, by investigating the effects of solid SBR-powder and aqueous SBR-latex, with and without admixtures, on mortar properties. Results showed that SBR-powder modified mortar exhibited lower water absorption and comparable flowability to SBR-latex, and the addition of nano-Silica, nano-Titania, and Zinc-Stearate further enhanced the flowability and compressive strength of the modified mortar. The increase in compressive strength was attributed to the increase in mortar hydration when SBR powder was used with nanoparticles.
