The role of properties on the decay susceptibility and conservation issues of soft limestones: Contribution of Anca stone (Portugal)

B. Sena da Fonseca et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the degradation patterns and rates of soft limestone in monuments, estimating their decay susceptibility based on properties such as drilling resistance and shore hardness. The research found correlations between physical, hydric, and mechanical properties of soft limestone, and highlighted the relationship between integrity loss rate and saturation coefficient. Additionally, an analytic relation to estimate decay and number of freeze-thaw cycles required for pre-collapse state was derived.

Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Textural Properties of the Lower Globigerina Limestone Used in the Built Heritage

Lino Bianco

Summary: This paper presents a study on the geochemistry, mineralogy, and textural properties of the Lower Globigerina Limestone Member in the Maltese archipelago, revealing higher non-carbonate and clay content in limestone of inferior quality. The analyses provide insights into the fabric of the matrix and the physico-mechanical bonding present in the limestone, which have implications for its deterioration.

Exploring alkaline routes for production of TEOS-based consolidants for carbonate stones using amine catalysts

Alexandra Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This work focuses on developing TEOS-based sols for consolidating carbonate stones using basic catalysis routes, showing high potential and advantages. By using basic catalysts containing NH-groups, new solutions with consolidation efficacy were achieved through parameter optimization and modification of the silica structure with different amines. High drilling resistance increments and cohesive monoliths were obtained by using sols with specific ratio combinations.
