Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio Predict Mortality in Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcers Undergoing Amputations

Wenwen Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that elevated platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were associated with higher all-cause mortality in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) following amputations. Multivariate analysis identified age, Wagner classification, PLR, NLR, creatinine, and direct bilirubin as independent predictors of mortality after amputation.

Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio as a Cardiovascular Risk Marker May Be Less Efficient in Women Than in Men

Ljiljana Trtica Majnaric et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, where chronic inflammation plays a crucial role in its development along with insulin resistance and diabetes type 2. Research on sex-specific differences in the lifetime course of NLR is lacking, despite the impact of factors such as aging, menopause, hormonal changes, immune reactions, and inflammation mechanisms on CVD prevalence in both sexes.

Clinical, microbiological and inflammatory markers of severe diabetic foot infections

Javier Aragon-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study found an association of necrosis, serum albumin, ESR and NLR values with severe DFI. A score >5 effectively diagnosed severe infections, with moderate infections having a worse prognosis if the score was >5. The presence of these predictive factors in moderate infections was significantly associated with higher amputation and recurrence rates, longer antibiotic treatment duration, and longer hospital stays.

Pre-operative Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio is Associated With 30 Day Death or Amputation After Revascularisation for Acute Limb Ischaemia

Nuno H. Coelho et al.

Summary: This study found that a higher pre-operative NLR was associated with a higher risk of 30-day death or amputation following intervention for Rutherford grade IIa or IIb ALI. NLR could potentially serve as a simple, widely available, and cost-effective biomarker to guide decision-making and contribute to reducing ALI morbidity and mortality.
