Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Clinical Applications of In Vivo and Ex Vivo Confocal Microscopy

Stefania Guida et al.

Summary: Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) is a valuable tool in clinical settings, providing a quasi-histologic view of tissues without the need for biopsy. It has shown to improve diagnostic accuracy of skin cancers and contribute to reducing unnecessary excisions, as well as improving margin recognition for tissue sparing in excisions. Further studies using CLSM in real-life settings could enhance our understanding of its applications.

A novel method for spatially-resolved thermal conductivity measurement by super-resolution photo-activated infrared imaging

Mario Marini et al.

Summary: Thermal conductivity measurements are crucial in the applied physical sciences, requiring new non-invasive methods for high-resolution spatial mapping. A novel method for quantitative thermal conductivity mapping at around 10 μm resolution was proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this work.

Comparison of photoacoustic imaging and histopathological examination in determining the dimensions of 52 human melanomas and nevi ex vivo

Jenny Hult et al.

Summary: Photoacoustic imaging, a novel technology combining optical and ultrasound imaging, has shown promising results in diagnosing melanoma by providing detailed maps of tumor borders with high contrast. It has the potential to improve tumor localization and diagnosis, offering a non-invasive alternative to surgical excision in the future.
