Another decade of photoacoustic imaging

Dhiman Das et al.

Summary: Photoacoustic imaging is a hybrid biomedical imaging modality that is rapidly advancing and finding its way to clinical practices. With improvements in technology, cost reduction, and increased portability, it holds great potential for a wide range of applications. The steady growth of the photoacoustic community and exploration of new directions by researchers suggest that photoacoustic imaging will establish itself as a regular imaging system in clinical practices in the future.

Beamforming for large-area scan and improved SNR in array-based photoacoustic microscopy

A. Cebrecos et al.

Summary: This study quantified the imaging performance of a large field-of-view optical-resolution photoacoustic-microscopy system using a phased-array detector, comparing three different beamforming strategies. The results showed that dynamic focus DAS beamforming method outperformed the other two methods in increasing signal-to-noise ratio and generalized contrast-to-noise ratio.

Dual-foci fast-scanning photoacoustic microscopy with 3.2-MHz A-line rate

Jiangbo Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a fiber-based dual-foci fast-scanning OR-PAM system that doubles the scanning rate while maintaining imaging quality. By using dual-foci method and stimulated Raman scattering, fast vascular imaging and oxygen saturation measurement are achieved, providing a new imaging tool for studying physiological and pathological changes.

Polyacrylamide hydrogel phantoms for performance evaluation of multispectral photoacoustic imaging systems

Ali Hariri et al.

Summary: This study introduces polyacrylamide (PAA) hydrogel as a candidate material for fabricating stable phantoms with well-characterized optical and acoustic properties that are biologically relevant over a broad range of system design parameters. The suitability of PAA phantoms for conducting image quality assessment of PAI systems was evaluated, showing that appropriately tuned PAA phantoms are useful tools for assessing and comparing PAI system image quality and may facilitate future standardization of performance test methodology.
