Energetics Dictates Deposition at Metal/Solid Electrolyte Interfaces

Deepti Tewari et al.

Summary: Solid electrolytes show potential in providing a mechanical barrier to prevent dendrite growth in lithium metal anodes, but dendrite penetration through the solid electrolytes has been reported. The deposition morphology at the metal/solid electrolyte interface is primarily determined by the strength of the energetic interaction between the two materials.

Summary: Solid-state lithium batteries have the potential to revolutionize lithium-ion battery and energy storage applications, but face challenges such as lithium-protrusions that can cause short-circuits. Through X-ray computed tomography, the 3D morphology of lithium protrusions inside short-circuited solid electrolytes has been obtained for the first time, shedding light on their characteristics and distribution, which is crucial for addressing short-circuit issues in solid-state lithium batteries.

Linking void and interphase evolution to electrochemistry in solid-state batteries using operando X-ray tomography

John A. Lewis et al.

Summary: The study using operando synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography reveals the evolution of lithium/solid-state electrolyte interfaces during battery cycling, showing how void formation, interphase growth, and volumetric changes affect cell behavior. Loss of contact at the interface between lithium and the solid-state electrolyte is found to be the primary cause of cell failure, while redox-active interphase and global volume changes upon charge also play significant roles in determining cell performance. These findings provide insights into the impact of chemo-mechanical phenomena on cell behavior, aiding in the development of solid-state batteries.

Challenges and Opportunities for Fast Charging of Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Bairav S. Vishnugopi et al.

Summary: Solid-state batteries (SSBs) show promise for fast-charging, but face challenges such as electro-chemo-mechanics interaction, interface evolution, and transport-kinetics dichotomy. Critical features like plating-stripping crosstalk, metallic filament growth, cathode microstructure, and interphase formation impact the fast-charge performance of SSBs. Modulating intrinsic and extrinsic design factors can favorably influence the mechanistic coupling and cross-correlations towards achieving fast-charge in SSBs.

Coupled crack propagation and dendrite growth in solid electrolyte of all-solid-state battery

Chunhao Yuan et al.

Summary: A coupled electrochemical-mechanical phase-field model was proposed to analyze the key factors affecting the cycling performance of solid-state lithium metal batteries. The study found that longer defects lead to more severe crack propagation and larger dendrite growth area, while initial defects have little impact on dendrite growth. Furthermore, stacking pressure greater than 10 MPa significantly accelerates crack propagation and dendrite growth.

Blocking lithium dendrite growth in solid-state batteries with an ultrathin amorphous Li-La-Zr-O solid electrolyte

Jordi Sastre et al.

Summary: Research has shown that tuning the lithium stoichiometry in LLZO can form an amorphous phase, effectively blocking the growth of lithium dendrites, increasing ionic conductivity while maintaining high electronic insulation. The amorphous Li-La-Zr-O as a dendrite blocking layer shows excellent performance in microbatteries, promising to accelerate the development of better solid-state batteries.

Microstructure and Pressure-Driven Electrodeposition Stability in Solid-State Batteries

Ankit Verma et al.

Summary: The stability of interfacial deposition at the Li-metal-solid electrolyte interface in all solid-state batteries is influenced by the stress-transport-electrochemistry coupling and the polycrystalline/amorphous solid electrolyte architecture. The study identifies the optimal solid electrolyte microstructure with desirable ionic conductivity and elastic modulus for superior transport and strength. Experimental results show that external stack pressure has a negligible impact on reaction kinetics, with electrolyte transport overpotentials playing a key role in electrodeposition stability.
