Decomposition of the Simulant 2-Chloroethyl Ethyl Sulfide Blister Agent under Ambient Conditions Using Metal-Organic Frameworks

Hong-Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), especially UiO-66 and its variant UiO-66S, show promising potential for gas-phase decontamination of both nerve agents and blister agents. The gas-phase chemical adsorption and decomposition of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES) by UiO-66S have been demonstrated for the first time, with an estimated half-life of 1.34 hours, the highest reported value for an MOF in such conditions. This study provides important insights into the use of UiO-66S as a future decontaminant for toxic chemical agents.

Integration of Pd nanoparticles with engineered pore walls in MOFs for enhanced catalysis

Luyan Li et al.

Summary: The study encapsulated naked Pd nanoparticles in a metal-organic framework (MOF) to regulate Pd microenvironment and interactions with substrates, resulting in significantly improved activity and selectivity in organic silane dehydrogenation coupling and hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes. This approach surpasses traditional methods, indicating the potential of metal NPs@MOF composites for efficiently integrating well-accessible metal sites with engineered microenvironments.

A solvent-free solid catalyst for the selective and color-indicating ambient-air removal of sulfur mustard

Daniel L. Collins-Wildman et al.

Summary: A solid, solvent-free catalyst has been reported for selective oxidation decontamination of sulfur mustard using only ambient air at room temperature, removing HD and producing HDO. This system rapidly removes HD as a neat liquid or a vapor, and the mechanisms of these aerobic decontamination reactions have been confirmed to involve reversible formation of a key intermediate, the bromosulfonium ion, and the role of Cu(II) in increasing the rate four-fold.

Effect of crystallographic structure of MnO2 on degradation of 2-CEES

Yueting Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, four MnO2 samples with different crystallographic structures were synthesized and their degradation ability against sulfur mustard simulant 2-CEES was investigated. Characterization data showed different crystal types exhibited various properties, leading to differences in degradation activity. The mechanism of 2-CEES degradation involved substrate hydrolysis and oxidation.
