Activation of the G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor Prevented the Development of Acute Colitis by Protecting the Crypt Cell

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: The activation of G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) prevents ulcerative colitis by protecting crypt cells, inhibiting crypt cell apoptosis, promoting proliferation of crypt cells, and thus preserving the intestinal mucosal barrier. This protective effect is achieved (at least in part) through the inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress. Mucosal healing is considered a crucial therapeutic target for colitis, and GPER is expected to become a new therapeutic target for this disease.
