Comparison of different irrigation methods to synergistically improve maize's yield, water productivity and economic benefits in an arid irrigation area

Tibin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that different irrigation methods and levels significantly affect maize yield, water consumption, and economic benefits. In the study, drip irrigation at -30 kPa is recommended as a priority to replace border irrigation, as it can increase yield, reduce water usage, and achieve higher net profit.

Integrated nitrogen amount and sources maximize maize nitrogen efficiency in the saline soils

Qi Miao et al.

Summary: The study shows that in coastal saline areas, using an appropriate amount and source of nitrogen fertilizer can increase maize yield, nitrogen use efficiency, and economic benefits. Under the same nitrogen application rate, treatments with ammonium sulfate or calcium ammonium nitrate are more conducive to maize growth than urea treatment, and can improve soil quality.

Evaluating the impact of flood irrigation on spatial variabilities of soil salinity and groundwater quality in an arid irrigated region

Nengzhan Zheng et al.

Summary: Soil salinization is a key issue in arid agriculture, with irrigation leading to the transfer of salt from soil to groundwater, deteriorating its quality. Irrigation can effectively remove salt from cultivated land and deeper soil layers, but has little impact on shallow soil layers of other land types.

Salinity and fertility stresses modify Ks and readily available water coefficients in maize (case study: Qazvin region)

Reza Saeidi et al.

Summary: Field stresses such as salinity and fertility stresses can increase stomatal resistance and affect evapotranspiration and plant water uptake. Accurate estimation of evapotranspiration and readily available water can improve irrigation scheduling accuracy, leading to reduced water use and water footprint.

Effects of irrigation methods and salinity on CO2 emissions from farmland soil during growth and fallow periods

Chenchen Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that drip irrigation significantly decreased soil CO2 emissions during the growth period, while irrigation with a salinity of 5.0 g/L promoted soil CO2 emissions. Irrigation method and water salinity had no effect on soil CO2 emissions during the fallow period.

Optimal irrigation water allocation in Hetao Irrigation District considering decision makers' preference under uncertainties

Xiaoxing Zhang et al.

Summary: A fuzzy multi-objective m(lambda)-measure dependent-chance programming model was proposed in this study to optimize limited irrigation water allocation among three crops and five subareas, considering the physical process of soil water balance and sensitivity of crop yield to water deficit. The results provide decision makers with various water-allocation schemes under drought conditions to ensure food security and maximize economic benefits.

Evaluating Precision Nitrogen Management Practices in Terms of Yield, Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Nitrogen Loss Reduction in Maize Crop Under Indian Conditions

Dinesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Nitrogen losses from sources applied to crops are a major contributor to nitrate pollution in surface and groundwater bodies globally, impacting drinking water quality. Developing crop-specific nitrogen management practices is necessary to reduce nitrogen losses and improve water quality.

Maize is stressed by salt rather than water under drip irrigation with soil matric potential higher than-50 kPa in an arid saline area

Tibin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that under drip irrigation, controlling soil matric potential below -30 kPa is beneficial for increasing maize leaf area index, specific leaf area, biomass, and yield. For each 1dS/m increase in soil ECe, maize yield decreases by 6.8%. Therefore, in this study, salt stress rather than water stress was identified as the key factor leading to reduced crop yield.

Role of Nitrogen in Assessing the Sustainability of Irrigated Areas: Case Study of Northern Mexico

Melida Gutierrez et al.

Summary: The study found that irrigation agriculture may lead to environmental issues such as soil degradation and aquifer contamination, posing a threat to crop production. Nitrous oxide emissions in the irrigated areas accounted for up to 4.5% of applied nitrogen, with nitrate losses reaching about 18%. Water tables in the aquifers were observed to be dropping at rates ranging from 0.4 m to 1.5 m per year, depending on the location.

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nitrogen levels on root characteristics and plant dry matter accumulation, distribution, and transportation in two maize hybrids. The results showed that nitrogen levels significantly influenced root parameters and dry matter accumulation, with high nitrogen promoting dry matter transport to grains. The study provides theoretical and practical guidance for maize production techniques.

Raziel A. Ordonez et al.

Summary: Quantifying maize root response to nitrogen (N) fertilizer, soil texture, and weather is crucial to understanding complex soil-root-plant processes. Different plant traits are maximized at different levels of mineral N nutrition, and new equations have been developed to predict root mass and root to shoot ratio based on the combined data of nitrogen rates, locations, and years.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of furrow fertigation on nitrate deep leaching, nitrate runoff losses, and plant nitrogen supply in various growth stages of maize. Results suggested that 80% levels of the required N-fertilizer and required irrigation water could be recommended as optimal to reduce nitrate losses and improve maize yield.
