Interactive effect of soil mulching and irrigation regime on yield, irrigation water use efficiency and left-to-right markweeds of trickle-irrigated onion

Ibrahim El-Metwally et al.

Summary: The study found that applying 60% of crop water requirements with peanut straw mulch or weeding can significantly reduce weed biomass in onion cultivation. Using peanut straw mulch under 80% crop water requirements can achieve acceptable marketable bulb yield, NPK contents, flavonoids content and economic returns comparable to using 100% crop water requirements.

Ali A. A. Mekdad et al.

Summary: The study found that early sowing date with low planting density and soil enrichment with HA(48) was the best combination for optimizing sunflower growth and yield in dry, saline, and nutrient-deficient environments. Choosing an appropriate sowing date and planting density, along with the application of anti-stress substances like HA, is crucial for maintaining global food security and sustainable agricultural development in dry environments.

Application of beet sugar byproducts improves sugar beet biofortification in saline soils and reduces sugar losses in beet sugar processing

Fahad Alotaibi et al.

Summary: The study found that the application of treated filter cake in saline soils significantly improved sugar beet biofortification and reduced sugar losses during beet sugar processing. Treated filter cake decreased K%, Na%, and alpha-amino-N content in the soil, while enhancing sucrose content and quality index in beet roots, leading to an increase in recoverable sugar yield. Linear regression analysis showed that reducing soil Na+ content and increasing Ca2+ content increased the quality index and sugar loss yield. Treated filter cake shows promise as an amendment for saline soil remediation to improve sugar beet biofortification and reduce sugar losses.

Soil mulching and deficit irrigation effect on sustainability of nutrients availability and uptake, and productivity of maize grown in calcareous soils

Emad M. M. Salem et al.

Summary: The study aimed to improve water and nutrient use efficiency in calcareous soils by incorporating sugar beet residues as mulching material and implementing various irrigation treatments in maize fields. Results showed that 80% irrigation with 7.2 ton ha(-1) sugar beet residues was particularly effective in enhancing biological yields and nutrient uptake. The combination of 80% irrigation and appropriate mulching could potentially lead to sustained improvement in calcareous soil properties over time.
