Therapeutic effects of an aspalathin-rich green rooibos extract, pioglitazone and atorvastatin combination therapy in diabetic db/db mice

Oelfah Patel et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of combining an aspalathin-rich green rooibos extract with pioglitazone and atorvastatin on blood glucose and lipid levels in obese diabetic mice. The combination treatment effectively lowered fasting plasma glucose levels, while increasing body weight, liver weight, and reducing retroperitoneal fat weight. Atorvastatin monotherapy effectively reduced cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and TG levels compared to untreated mice.

Bioactivity, bioavailability, and gut microbiota transformations of dietary phenolic compounds: implications for COVID-19

Paula R. Augusti et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the mechanisms of action of dietary phenolic compounds in mitigating COVID-19, including their antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects, as well as their bioavailability and interaction with gut microbiota. Safety issues and potential drug interactions of dietary phenolic compounds in COVID-19 therapeutics were also discussed.

SARS-CoV-2 Host Receptor ACE2 Protein Expression Atlas in Human Gastrointestinal Tract

Xiang An et al.

Summary: The study found heterogeneous expression patterns of ACE2 protein in the gastrointestinal tract, with a punctate distribution in hepatic cells. Compared to adjacent non-tumor tissues, ACE2 protein expression was significantly increased in colon, stomach, and pancreatic cancer tissues but decreased in liver cancer tissues. The expression level of ACE2 protein was not correlated with patient survival in gastrointestinal cancers.
