Vertical Stratification of Microbial Communities in Woody Plants

Mohammad Bahram et al.

Summary: Bacterial and fungal endophytes play a significant role in the performance and health of host plants. This study reveals that the structure of bacterial and fungal communities in trees is more influenced by the vertical location of tree compartments rather than the locality, species, and individuals of host trees. The microbial communities show stronger host specificity aboveground compared to belowground compartments. Bacterial communities are more influenced by environmental conditions, while fungal communities are more influenced by host identity.

Metagenomic assessment of the global diversity and distribution of bacteria and fungi

Mohammad Bahram et al.

Summary: Bacteria and fungi play a crucial role in determining environmental and host functioning, with their relative abundance ratio being a distinctive microbial feature of habitats. The diversity patterns of bacteria and fungi seem to depend on substrate availability and biotic interactions, showing differences in assembly patterns and processes across different habitats.

Heterogeneity of the white truffle Tuber magnatum in a limited geographic area of Central-Southern Italy

Pamela Monaco et al.

Summary: The Molise region in Italy is one of the richest areas for truffles and contributes significantly to national production of the valuable Tuber magnatum. A study on two populations of T. magnatum from Molise region revealed significant variability within and between the populations, with three haplotypes identified regardless of collection site. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons showed a predominance of alpha-Proteobacteria in truffle-associated bacterial communities, with some truffles also having unusual microbial profiles dominated by other bacterial genera like Pedobacter and Polaromonas.

Structure of Chimpanzee Gut Microbiomes across Tropical Africa

Clifton P. Bueno de Mesquita et al.

Summary: This study on wild chimpanzees' gut microbiomes reveals a high degree of regional specificity in microbiome composition, linked to host genetics, available plant foods, and potentially cultural differences in diet influenced by tool use. Genetic differences primarily shaped community composition at large scales, while vegetation and potentially tool use were key factors driving within-region differences.
