Flash flood susceptibility assessment using the parameters of drainage basin morphometry in SE Bangladesh

Akhtar Alam et al.

Summary: This study examines the relative flash flood susceptibility of thirteen watersheds in southeastern Bangladesh using 18 morphometric parameters. Through spatial analysis algorithms and topographic indices, the combined effects of morphology and topography on flash flood susceptibility are investigated within selected watersheds.

A novel hybrid quantum-PSO and credal decision tree ensemble for tropical cyclone induced flash flood susceptibility mapping with geospatial data

Phuong-Thao Thi Ngo et al.

Summary: Flash floods are considered highly destructive worldwide, especially in tropical countries, leading to the development of a new model called QPSO-CDTreeEns for spatial prediction of flash floods. This model combines Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization and the Credal Decision Tree ensemble to optimize parameters and outperform existing machine learning algorithms in flash flood susceptibility mapping. The proposed model shows promise for sustainable land-use planning and disaster mitigation strategies.

Flood susceptibility modelling using advanced ensemble machine learning models

Abu Reza Md Towfiqul Islam et al.

Summary: This study applied and assessed two new hybrid ensemble models, Dagging and Random Subspace (RS) coupled with Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for modeling flood susceptibility maps at the Teesta River basin in Bangladesh. The models performed well in predicting flood occurrences and could help in reducing flood-related threats and implementing effective mitigation strategies in the future. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) of ROC was above 0.80 for all models, with the Dagging model showing superior performance compared to RF, ANN, SVM, RS, and benchmark models.

Using machine learning models, remote sensing, and GIS to investigate the effects of changing climates and land uses on flood

Mohammadtaghi Avand et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of climate and land use changes on flood susceptibility areas in the Tajan watershed in Iran. By predicting land use changes over the next 20 years and projecting future climate change, the study identified factors such as elevation, distance from river, land use, slope, and rainfall as the most important factors influencing flooding in the basin. The findings suggest that decreased forest cover, reduced rangeland near rivers, and increased rainfall could lead to increased probabilities of flooding in downstream areas of the watershed and near the sea. The RF model more accurately predicted flood probability compared to the GLMbayes model.

Spatial Prediction of Future Flood Risk: An Approach to the Effects of Climate Change

Mohammadtaghi Avand et al.

Summary: This research developed a probability flood map for floods resulting from climate change in the future using FDA and ANN models. The FDA model showed the highest accuracy in preparing the flood probability map. Factors like distance from the River, altitude, slope, and rainfall were found to have the greatest impact on floods in the study area, and the future flood susceptibility maps indicated that the highest area is related to the very low class.
