870-850 Ma-old magmatic event in eastern Borborema Province, NE Brazil: Another Tonian failed attempt to break up the Sao Francisco Paleoplate?

Sergio Pacheco Neves et al.

Summary: A new magmatic event occurred in the Central and Southern subprovinces of the Borborema Province in northeastern Brazil about 50 million years after the Cariris Velhos event. Geochronological studies show that the RCD and PEALD were part of the same crustal block around 870-850 million years ago, indicating that the East Pernambuco shear zone is not a suture. These findings suggest that the Borborema Province and the Sao Francisco Craton were once part of the same plate before the Brasiliano Orogeny.

Brittle-ductile fabrics and P-T conditions of deformation in the East Pernambuco shear zone (Borborema Province, NE Brazil)

Paulo Castellan et al.

Summary: The study of fabrics in the East Pernambuco shear zone reveals different pressure and temperature conditions during deformation, suggesting heterogeneous strain accommodation along the shear zone. The observations indicate a transitional, brittle-ductile strain regime with decreasing temperature gradient from west to east, possibly in an intracontinental setting.

Decratonization by rifting enables orogenic reworking and transcurrent dispersal of old terranes in NE Brazil

Carlos E. Ganade et al.

Summary: The dispersion and deformation of cratonic fragments within orogens require weakening of craton margins, leading to a process of decratonization. The Borborema Province in NE Brazil is one example of orogens that led to the amalgamation of Gondwana, with a period of extension and opening of narrow oceans preceding inversion and collision. This process involved the pulling away of the Sao Francisco Craton from the Benino-Nigerian Shield, followed by inversion of an oceanic basin and transpression.

Neoproterozoic magmatic arc volcanism in the Borborema Province, NE Brazil: possible flare-ups and lulls and implications for western Gondwana assembly

Fabricio Andrade Caxito et al.

Summary: The new data on rhyolitic metavolcanic and metavolcaniclastic rocks in NE Brazil provide insights into widespread arc-related phenomena during the Neoproterozoic, with major magmatic activities occurring around 635-600 Ma. The rocks are mostly calc-alkaline, magnesian, and peraluminous, with specific geochemical signatures such as LREE enrichment.

Comparative geological evolution of the Borborema Province and Sao Francisco Craton (eastern Brazil): Decratonization and crustal reworking during West Gondwana assembly and implications for paleogeographic reconstructions

Sergio Pacheco Neves

Summary: This study compares the crustal evolution of the Brasiliano-Pan-African Borborema Province with the Sao Francisco Craton, highlighting several geological aspects that are uncommon in other cratons/orogenic belts, indicating a shared evolution. The presence of similar geological features suggests that they may have had some similarities during their formation process.

Summary: This study investigates the intracontinental deformation in the Borborema Province of Northeast Brazil, finding through thermodynamic modeling and petrochronology that the deformation lasted until at least 530-525 Ma and was influenced by high geothermal gradient conditions.

A new record of continental arc magmatism in the Ceara Central Domain, Borborema Province (NE Brazil): evidence from the Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex

Joao Paulo A. Pitombeira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the arc magmatism in the western active margin of Gondwana by analyzing new U-Pb zircon ages, lithogeochemistry, whole-rock Nd, and in situ zircon Hf isotopes from the Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex in NE Brazil. The results suggest that the granitoids in the area were formed from a mixture of juvenile magmas and older crustal components. The geochronological and geochemical data indicate a synchronous evolution with the Santa Quiteria Magmatic Arc, pointing to a magmatic flare-up event between 660 and 620 Ma during the subduction of Goias-Pharusian oceanic crust in the central portion of West Gondwana.

Late Ediacaran lateral-escape tectonics as recorded by the Patos shear zone (Borborema Province, NE Brazil)

Carlos Jose Archanjo et al.

Summary: The lateral escape tectonics mediated by strike-slip fault zones are an efficient mechanism of rock deformation in collision zones. The study in Northeastern Brazil reveals the timing of high-grade metamorphism and compositions of terranes involved in shear deformation. Partial melting was found to have occurred in the Late Ediacaran, and differential shear zone exhumation is indicated by cooling rates.
