Covid-19 and kidney injury: Pathophysiology and molecular mechanisms

Elham Ahmadian et al.

Summary: Kidney involvement in Covid-19 mainly presents as proteinuria and acute kidney injury, with mechanisms including direct viral infection of kidney cells, immune dysregulation, and other factors. Understanding the pathophysiology is crucial for developing effective therapeutic strategies.

Reductions in 2020 US life expectancy due to COVID-19 and the disproportionate impact on the Black and Latino populations

Theresa Andrasfay et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly reduced life expectancy in the United States, particularly impacting Black and Latino populations. Projections suggest a stark decline in life expectancy for these groups compared to Whites, with significant implications for health disparities.

An immune-based biomarker signature is associated with mortality in COVID-19 patients

Michael S. Abers et al.

Summary: Immune and inflammatory responses are important factors contributing to disease severity in COVID-19. This study identified specific immune-based biomarkers associated with mortality in COVID-19 patients, with some biomarkers consistently higher in those who died compared to those who recovered, suggesting their potential for early prediction of disease outcome.

Racial Disparities in COVID-19 Testing and Outcomes Retrospective Cohort Study in an Integrated Health System

Gabriel J. Escobar et al.

Summary: Racial disparities exist in outcomes after SARS-CoV-2 infection, with race being the most important predictor of infection and associated with increased hospitalization risk but not mortality. Adjusted analyses showed no racial differences in inpatient mortality or total mortality during the study period.

Exposure and risk factors for COVID-19 and the impact of staying home on Michigan residents

Kuan-Han H. Wu et al.

Summary: COVID-19 has had a significant impact on clinical care and lifestyles globally, with a substantial number of cases reported in the State of Michigan. African Americans were found to have higher rates of COVID-19 diagnosis, which may be attributed to factors such as working as essential workers and lower socioeconomic status. Efforts should be made to focus on prevention and mitigation strategies for COVID-19 and address the existing inequality gaps that contribute to higher risks for certain populations.

Rapid seroconversion and persistent functional IgG antibodies in severe COVID-19 patients correlates with an IL-12p70 and IL-33 signature

Ariel Munitz et al.

Summary: The study found that moderate/severe patients rapidly developed IgG/IgA antibodies, while IgM antibodies against the viral receptor binding domain were detected early in the disease. There was a significant reduction in IgM/IgA antibodies over time. The presence of potentially neutralizing antibodies was correlated with IgG/IgA levels.

Visualizing COVID-19 Mortality Rates and African-American Populations in the USA and Pennsylvania

Beverly I. Anaele et al.

Summary: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified African-Americans as having an increased risk of COVID-19 mortality, with disparities rooted in healthcare access and social determinants of health. Research found that areas with higher African-American populations generally had higher COVID-19 mortality rates, particularly in the northeast USA and eastern PA. These relationships were quantified through statistical analyses at both state and county levels, highlighting the need for more resources to address the high COVID-19 mortality rates among African-American populations.

Association Between Ethnicity and Severe COVID-19 Disease: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Antony Raharja et al.

Summary: This study found that compared to White ethnicity, Black and Asian populations had similar overall mortality rates, while Hispanic ethnicity had lower overall mortality rates. After adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities, the elevated risks for Black and Asian populations became non-significant. There was a trend towards greater disparities in COVID-19 outcomes for ethnic minorities in the UK.
