Epidemiology and Ecology of Severe Fever With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome in China, 2010-2018

Dong Miao et al.

Summary: The study analyzed surveillance data on laboratory-confirmed SFTS cases in China from 2010 to 2018, revealing an increasing trend in SFTS cases and a declining case fatality rate, as well as the identification of four geographical clusters. The research indicated that the diffusion and persistence of SFTS are influenced by factors such as elevation, vegetation coverage, and the proximity of habitats of migratory birds, suggesting targeted interventions based on risk factors.

Pathological Characteristics of a Patient with Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) Infected with SFTS Virus through a Sick Cat's Bite

Masatoshi Tsuru et al.

Summary: This case study presents the death of a woman infected with SFTSV after being bitten by a sick cat, which was found to have similar symptoms and laboratory findings as human SFTS cases. Through pathology and immunohistochemical testing, researchers identified the presence of SFTSV antigen, suggesting a rare transmission route of the virus from a sick cat to a human. Therefore, in SFTS-endemic regions, consideration should be given to the possibility of SFTS transmission through cat bites.

Seroprevalence of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus in Small-Animal Veterinarians and Nurses in the Japanese Prefecture with the Highest Case Load

Yumi Kirino et al.

Summary: SFTSV, the causative agent of SFTS, is maintained in cycles involving ticks and wild animal hosts, but direct transmission from cats and dogs to humans has been identified in Japan. A survey in Miyazaki prefecture revealed a seropositivity rate of 2.2% among small-animal-practice workers, higher than that in healthy blood donors. Enhancing awareness of biosafety at animal hospitals is crucial for SFTSV control.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus: emerging novel phlebovirus and their control strategy

Mark Anthony Casel et al.

Summary: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne disease caused by a novel phlebovirus, with main symptoms including high fever, low platelet and white blood cell levels, and gastrointestinal problems. Animal models are aiding researchers in understanding the virus and disease, as well as developing treatments and vaccines for SFTS.
