Simultaneous Infection With Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome and Influenza Viruses Abrogates Clinical Protection Induced by Live Attenuated Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Vaccination

Tiphany Chrun et al.

Summary: The study indicated that co-infection of PRRSV-2 and swine influenza H3N2 virus weakened the protective effect of PRRS modified live virus vaccine while enhancing antibody responses. In contrast, co-infection in non-immunized animals helped reduce viral load and potentiate T cell responses. The upregulation of inhibitory cytokines gene expression in vaccinated pigs' lungs may have influenced responses to H3N2 and PRRSV-2.

Changes to virus taxonomy and to the International Code of Virus Classification and Nomenclature ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (2021)

Peter J. Walker et al.

Summary: This article reports the changes to virus taxonomy approved and ratified by ICTV in March 2021. All proposals and revisions were passed by an absolute majority of ICTV members. ICTV mandated a new uniform rule for virus species naming, abolished the notion of a type species, and clarified its remit through an official definition of 'virus' and other types of mobile genetic elements.

The jigsaw of PRRSV virulence

I. Ruedas-Torres et al.

Summary: PRRSV is considered one of the most economically important diseases in the global pig industry, causing reproductive failure in sows and respiratory problems in growing pigs. Strains capable of producing higher mortality rates and greater severity in clinical signs and lesions have been identified since the late 1980s in the United States and Canada. However, there is still a lack of homogeneity and consensus in describing these virulent strains.
