Implementing a Rapid, Two-Step Delirium Screening Protocol in Acute Care: Barriers and Facilitators

Erica K. Husser et al.

Summary: This study investigated the barriers and facilitators to implementing the ultra-brief confusion assessment method (UB-CAM) protocol for delirium identification in hospitalized older adults, with overall positive reception from clinicians. The findings highlight the importance of considering context and a systemic approach when implementing delirium screening.

Comparing performance on the Months of the Year Backwards test in hospitalised patients with delirium, dementia, and no cognitive impairment: an exploratory study

Wolfgang Hasemann et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the performance of the Months of the Year Backwards (MOTYB) test in older hospitalised patients with delirium, dementia, and no cognitive impairment. The findings showed that patients with delirium or dementia performed significantly worse than those without cognitive impairment, especially in terms of engagement with the test. This suggests that analyzing response patterns and errors in addition to correct recitation of the months may provide valuable information for assessing cognitive impairment in older patients.

What delirium detection tools are used in routine clinical practice in the United Kingdom? Survey results from 91% of acute healthcare organisations

Zoe Tieges et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate delirium assessment processes and tools in non-intensive clinical care settings in the UK. Results showed that 95% of National Health Service units reported using formal delirium assessment processes, with 80% using the 4AT tool. This demonstrates widespread real-world adoption of delirium detection methods and guidelines in UK hospitals.

A mobile app for delirium screening

Brett Armstrong et al.

Summary: This study describes an algorithm and technical implementation of a mobile app using adaptive testing for delirium diagnosis. The app was successfully used by physicians, nurses, and CNAs for delirium assessments, with positive feedback and no errors reported in data transmission. The app has the potential for wider use and could be easily adapted for different operating systems.
