Genome-wide association study identifies new loci associated with risk of HBV infection and disease progression

Zheng Zeng et al.

Summary: Recent studies have identified susceptibility genes of HBV clearance, chronic hepatitis B, liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and shown the host genetic factors play an important role in these HBV-related outcomes. Several novel candidate genes associated with individual HBV infectious outcomes, progressive stages, and liver enzymes were identified. Selective significance of two SNPs (HLA-DPA1, HLA-DPB1) in non-East Asian versus East Asian populations suggests that host genetic factors contribute to the ethnic disparities of susceptibility of HBV infection.

Association of an IFN-γ variant with susceptibility to chronic hepatitis B by the enhancement of HBV DNA replication

Walid Ben Selma et al.

Summary: The study showed an association between the IFN-gamma +874T/A SNP and persistence of HBV, potentially enhancing HBV DNA replication in chronic hepatitis B patients in the Tunisian population. Minor +874A allele and genotypes were significantly associated with susceptibility to hepatitis B infection, especially in patients with high viral DNA loads.
