The molecular structures of polysaccharides affect their reverse osmosis membrane fouling behaviors

Xin Tong et al.

Summary: This study found that the molecular structure rather than molecular weight of polysaccharides influenced the fouling behavior of reverse osmosis membranes. Branched-chain polysaccharides were more likely to cause severe membrane fouling and form thicker foulant layers on membrane surfaces compared to straight-chain polysaccharides. Additionally, the presence of Ca2+ had a significant impact on the fouling behavior of straight-chain acid polysaccharides but not on branched-chain polysaccharides or neutral polysaccharides.

Chemical cleaning reagent of sodium hypochlorite eroding polyvinylidene fluoride ultrafiltration membranes: Aging pathway, performance decay and molecular mechanism

Liumo Ren et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the aging effects of NaClO on PVDF ultrafiltration membranes, finding a significant decline in antifouling performance for aged membranes, with stabilized fouling layers leading to increased irreversible fouling resistance. The intermolecular forces in combination with the interfacial free energies were used to evaluate the fouling behaviors of aged membranes, indicating a more spontaneous foulant-membrane adhesion and reduced flux recovery after physical cleaning. Comparatively, foulant-membrane interfacial free energies were found to be more sensitive and reliable indicators of membrane fouling.

Separation and recovery of alkali cellulose wastewater with high concentration of salts by cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol)/ polytetrafluoroethylene ultrafiltration membrane

Kang Yang et al.

Summary: Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium (CMC) is commonly used in industries like paper-making and textiles, and the treatment of CMC wastewater with salt and alkali has become a focus in wastewater treatment. In this study, membranes consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were prepared for the separation of CMC and salt-alkali. Different cross-linking methods were used to enhance the structural stability of the membranes, resulting in improved separation performance. The membranes showed high salt-alkali optional transmitting rates, CMC rejection rates, and flux values, making them effective for the treatment of high-salt-alkali cellulose wastewater.
