Comprehensive evaluation of stormwater pollutants characteristics, purification process and environmental impact after low impact development practices

Zheng Kong et al.

Summary: Understanding stormwater characteristics and purification processes of different underlying surfaces in intensive LID catchments is crucial for summarizing issues with built LID practices and providing guidance for future LID construction. Results from a study in Yuelai, Chongqing showed varying stormwater pollutant characteristics and purification processes in different LID areas due to distinct layouts and facilities. Although LID construction significantly reduced pollutants and improved water quality, challenges such as inadequate nitrogen removal and runoff scouring effect still need to be addressed in the future.

Effect of typhoon rainstorm patterns on the spatio-temporal distribution of non-point source pollution in a coastal urbanized watershed

Xiaoran Fu et al.

Summary: Extreme climate conditions, such as typhoon rainfall events, have significant impacts on non-point source pollution in urban areas. Early pattern rainstorm events may lead to more severe pollution, while urbanized land-use greatly affects pollution load intensity. The research findings provide valuable insights for designing effective strategies to mitigate rainfall-runoff pollution in coastal urban watersheds in China.

Impacts of rapid urbanization on characteristics, sources and variation of fecal coliform at watershed scale

Xiaoyue Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant spatiotemporal variation of fecal coliform (FC) in an urbanizing watershed, with peak FC levels occurring in summer and autumn in upstream and downstream areas respectively. When the impervious surface area reached 65%, the key source of FC shifted from agriculture to urban. However, there was a poor correlation between urban landscape pattern changes and annual FC variation. Urbanization speed was identified as the main driver for deteriorating FC pollution, with Low Impact Development potentially leading to a significant reduction in FC levels at the watershed scale.

Hybrid SWMM and particle swarm optimization model for urban runoff water quality control by using green infrastructures (LID-BMPs)

Soudabeh Taghizadeh et al.

Summary: A new methodology for planning green infrastructures for improving urban runoff water quality was proposed, aiming to optimize the design of low impact development practices in urban areas. Results indicate that bio-retention basins are the most effective single BMP, while an optimized combination of BMPs can significantly reduce TSS concentrations.

Xiaoyue Zhang et al.

Summary: Spatial planning is essential for sponge city construction, and a multi-criteria decision model was established in this study to prioritize SC sites in a rapidly urbanizing watershed in Beijing, China. The findings revealed that priority was highest in emerging regions and urban core areas.
