Antibiotic removal by activated biochar: performance, isotherm, and kinetic studies

Fengli Shao et al.

Summary: Biomass waste can be converted into activated biochar, which has a higher adsorption capacity for Cefradine (CF) in wastewater compared to pristine biochar. The adsorption process is pH-dependent and involves multiple interactions including pi-pi EDA interaction, hydrogen bonding, ion exchange, and electrostatic adsorption. Fixed bed experiments demonstrate that activated biochar is a promising and highly effective adsorbent for treating large volumes of CF-contaminated wastewater.
