Comparative Assessment of Pretreatment Options for Biomass Pyrolysis: Linking Biomass Compositions to Resulting Pyrolysis Behaviors, Kinetics, and Product Yields

Zhihao Wang et al.

Summary: Four representative pretreatment methods were used to alter eucalyptus compositions and study their effects on pyrolysis behaviors, kinetics, and product yields. All four pretreatment methods significantly decreased the AAEM contents of eucalyptus, with DH and MOP removing hemicellulose or lignin fractions. The activation energy for hemicellulose pyrolysis was reduced by WW, AW, and DH, while all four methods improved cellulose pyrolysis activation energy. Additionally, the formation of certain pyrolysis products was suppressed, and the levoglucosan yield was increased by all four pretreatment methods.

Rice straw burning: a review on its global prevalence and the sustainable alternatives for its effective mitigation

Gurraj Singh et al.

Summary: Rice is an important staple crop worldwide, but its production is associated with environmental concerns such as greenhouse gas emissions contributing to global warming. This study investigates the practice of rice straw burning globally and discusses alternatives for more sustainable utilization of agricultural wastes. Based on life cycle assessment studies, soil incorporation and electricity generation are identified as the most environmentally friendly alternatives with room for improvement in the future.

Bio-oil stability through stepwise pyrolysis of groundnut shells: Role of chemical composition, alkali and alkaline earth metals, and storage conditions

Anubhuti Bhatnagar et al.

Summary: Bio-oil from crop residues is unstable due to reactive compounds and metals, hindering its use as a chemical feedstock. Different pyrolysis methods were tested on groundnut shells, with two-step pyrolysis at 340 degrees C and continuous heating producing the most stable bio-oil despite higher AAEM concentrations. Storage temperature and solvent addition further improved bio-oil stability, with minimal degradation observed after storage at 4 degrees C with methanol. This study contributes to the development of stepwise pyrolysis units for crop residue management.
