A Decade of Damage Control Resuscitation New Transfusion Practice, New Survivors, New Directions

Elaine Cole et al.

Summary: Recent innovations in trauma major hemorrhage management have led to a significant decrease in mortality rates, although there are still opportunities for improvement. The proportion of trauma patients dying within a short period has decreased, with survivors more likely to be discharged home. Late deaths are now mainly attributed to traumatic brain injury and multiple organ dysfunction.

A comparison of platelet function in cold-stored whole blood and platelet concentrates

Sian Huish et al.

Summary: Platelet function in stored whole blood (CS-WB) decreased over time, with increased activation and cellular damage, reduced aggregatory response, and a gradual increase in functional platelet microparticles. Compared to platelet concentrates, CS-WB maintained a maximal response to agonists for a longer period, suggesting a potential shelf-life of up to 21 days.

Epidemiology of Massive Transfusion - A Common Intervention in Need of a Definition

Zoe K. McQuilten et al.

Summary: While massive transfusion (MT) recipients are a small proportion of all transfused patients, they account for about 10% of blood products issued and are mainly used to support major bleeding in surgical, trauma, and gastrointestinal hemorrhage patients. The clinical context, number of blood products required, patient age, and comorbidities are key predictors of short- and long-term survival outcomes. A standard, universally accepted definition of MT is urgently needed to improve care and outcomes for patients with major bleeding.
