Grain size heterogeneity controls strengthening to weakening of granite over high-temperature treatment

Fangchao Kang et al.

Summary: This study examined the physical and mechanical properties of granite specimens of different grain grades, finding that the heterogeneity of grain size affects the critical temperature and strength of granite. Nonuniform distribution of grain size leads to cracks induced by thermal expansion mismatch, which can impact the strength of granite. The findings help in predicting the strength of granite under various grain size distributions and thermal environments, which is crucial for the site location and design of deep geological repositories.
