Supplement of biochar and vermicompost amendments in coir and peat growing media improves N management and yields of leafy vegetables

Aime J. Messiga et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of biochar and vermicompost as substitutes for conventional growing media on leafy vegetable yields and nitrogen content. The results showed that partial substitution of peat and coir with biochar and vermicompost, respectively, maintained acceptable crop yields and reduced nitrogen losses, which is beneficial for the environment.

Use of compost and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria affect sugarcane mineral nutrition, phosphorus availability, and the soil bacterial community

German A. Estrada-Bonilla et al.

Summary: The study found that the combined use of compost and PSB increased phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium content in sugarcane leaves and improved soil phosphorus availability. This new strategy shows potential for enhancing sugarcane growth with reduced economic and environmental impact.

Earthworm intervened nutrient recovery and greener production of vermicompost from Ipomoea staphylina - An invasive weed with emerging environmental challenges

Ramalingam Balachandar et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the effective utilization of invasive weed biomass through vermicomposting, resulting in decreased organic matter and increased electrical conductivity, total NPK. In the V4 combination, activities of dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, cellulase, and protease were significantly higher, indicating the positive impact of mushroom spent straw and cow dung addition during vermicomposting.

Hidden Engineers and Service Providers: Earthworms in Agricultural Land-Use Types of South Tyrol, Italy

Johannes Rudisser et al.

Summary: The study found that earthworms were more abundant in grasslands and apple orchards, while the distribution in vineyards was less clear. Overall, the estimated earthworm biomass in agricultural areas in South Tyrol was 34,900 tons, with a total value of EUR 872 million. This suggests that earthworms are suitable indicators for sustainable soil use at the landscape scale.
