Multiscale analysis of friction behavior at fretting interfaces

Zhinan Zhang et al.

Summary: The friction behavior at fretting interfaces is crucial in tribology, and the contact intervals can accurately determine the friction characteristics of a material. The differences in hardness, stiffness modulus, and material configuration have considerable influence on the fretting process. Molecular dynamics simulations and new energy theories provide insights for predicting fretting processes, material selection, and optimization.

Fretting wear with variable coefficient of friction in gross sliding conditions

Ivan I. Argatov et al.

Summary: This study considers two- and three-dimensional contact problems with fretting wear in the gross-slip regime from a unified point of view within the framework of linear elasticity. A model is constructed for the evolution of the contact zone based on a uniform approximation for the contact pressure, suitable for arbitrary initial gap between the surfaces of contacting elastically similar bodies. The model equations are explicitly derived for Hertzian contact geometry.

Fretting wear and mechanical properties of surface-nanostructural titanium alloy bone plate

Gaoqi Wang et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential applications of surface-nanostructural TiO2 coatings on titanium alloy for medical implants, as well as the relationships among the formation mechanism, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of the coatings. The experiment results showed that the TiO2 nanotube coatings have positive effects on the biocompatibility and antibacterial properties of bone plates, and prolonging the oxidation time can further improve the wear resistance.

Fretting wear evolution of γ-TiAl alloy

Yulei Yang et al.

Summary: The fretting wear evolution of gamma-TiAl alloy was investigated, showing that the wear debris can form a stable tribolayer over time, leading to a rapid decrease in wear rate as the thickness of the tribolayer increases with more fretting cycles.

Modeling adhesive and abrasive wear phenomena in fretting interfaces: A multiphysics approach coupling friction energy, third body and contact oxygenation concepts

Pierre Arnaud et al.

Summary: This research develops an extended friction-energy wear approach that takes into consideration the presence of debris layer and adhesive wear through simulating the interfacial di-oxygen partial pressure. The multiphysics modeling can estimate locally the wear condition of the fretted interface and predict the transition from pure abrasive to abrasive-adhesive response, as well as providing reliable estimations of the maximum wear depth extension for the first time.
