Food waste recovery pathways: Challenges and opportunities for an emerging bio-based circular economy. A systematic review and an assessment

R. Santagata et al.

Summary: The transition towards a Circular Economy in the agri-food supply chain requires appropriate support mechanisms and a solution to the global issue of food waste. The study evaluates the ecological performances of food waste treatment processes in EU28 using Life Cycle Assessment and Emergy Accounting methods. Identified opportunities include reducing environmental pressure and better resource management, but the potential threat of poor food waste management on human health must also be considered.
