Development and characterisation of a pectin-based edible film that contains mulberry leaf extract and its bio-active components

Sharma Shivangi et al.

Summary: The developed pectin-based films, blended with bioactive compounds, showed improved antioxidative, antimicrobial activities, and better mechanical properties. The eco-friendly nature of the films was demonstrated by water solubility and soil degradation properties, making them a promising natural alternative for extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

Understanding the different emulsification mechanisms of pectin: Comparison between watermelon rind and two commercial pectin sources

D. A. Mendez et al.

Summary: The study identified three different emulsification mechanisms for pectin extracted from different sources, with watermelon rind pectin showing the highest emulsification capacity due to its protein content and longer sugar side chains. Meanwhile, apple pectin had the lowest emulsification capacity mainly attributed to its viscosity effects, and commercial citrus pectin formed a better adsorbed layer but could not prevent flocculation at low concentrations.

Development and characterization of novel antioxidant films based on chitosan and Maillard reaction products

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to manufacture antioxidant films based on chitosan and Maillard reaction products derived from cod skin collagen peptides. The results showed that with the incremental amounts of MRPs, the thickness, water solubility, and water vapor permeability of chitosan films increased, while water content, tensile strength, and elongation at break decreased. Incorporation of MRPs improved UV-vis light barrier properties and antioxidant capacities of the films, with little effect on thermal stability within the 0-10% range.

Fabrication of pectin/agar blended functional film: Effect of reinforcement of melanin nanoparticles and grapefruit seed extract

Swarup Roy et al.

Summary: The physical properties of pectin/agar composite films were improved by adding MNP and GSE, which enhanced UV-blocking property and antibacterial activity while sacrificing transparency. The addition of MNP and GSE synergistically increased the film's strength.

Novel functional chitosan and pectin bio-based packaging films with encapsulated Opuntia-ficus indica waste

M. Kurek et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of adding red prickly pear waste on the characteristics of chitosan and pectin films, revealing that prickly pear peel extract had higher antioxidant properties. The antioxidant power of extracts was around 1000 mgAAE.100 g(-1), while films had approximately 100 mgAAE.100 g(-1). Changes in film properties were more significant when powdered extracts were used.
