The design of resilient food supply chain networks prone to epidemic disruptions

Seyed Mohammad Gholami-Zanjani et al.

Summary: The food supply chains are facing challenges from increased supply and demand uncertainty, as well as unexpected disruptions such as natural hazards, industrial accidents, and epidemics. A new risk modeling approach is needed to address these issues and design a resilient network.

Optimization of supply chain networks with inclusion of labor: Applications to COVID-19 pandemic disruptions

Anna Nagurney

Summary: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper constructs supply chain network optimization models that include labor as an important variable, taking into account disruptions to labor availability and possible flexibility during the pandemic. The framework considers elastic and fixed demands for products, different types of labor capacities, and is relevant to various supply chain applications. Both theoretical results and numerical examples are presented.

COVID-19 pandemic related supply chain studies: A systematic review

Priyabrata Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The study systematically reviews existing research on the COVID-19 pandemic within the supply chain discipline, identifying four main recurring themes - impacts, resilience strategies, technology implementation, and supply chain sustainability. The analysis reveals a lack of empirically designed and theoretically grounded studies in this area, limited generalizability of findings, and a focus on high-demand essential goods and healthcare products rather than low-demand items and SMEs. Additionally, the study offers research questions and directions for further investigation by considering findings from prior epidemic outbreaks and other disruptions in the supply chain discipline.

Food retail supply chain resilience and the COVID-19 pandemic: A digital twin-based impact analysis and improvement directions

Diana Burgos et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the food retail supply chains, particularly affected by pandemic intensity, government measures, inventory-ordering dynamics, and customer behavior. Surges in demand and supplier shutdowns have had the highest impact on supply chain operations and performance, while the impact of transportation disruptions was relatively low.

A production recovery plan in manufacturing supply chains for a high-demand item during COVID-19

Sanjoy Kumar Paul et al.

Summary: This paper presents a mathematical modeling approach to develop a production recovery model for high-demand and essential items during COVID-19. The authors analyze the properties of the recovery plan and optimize it to maximize profit in the recovery window. The results show that the model is effective in revising production plans during disruptions and improves profitability for manufacturers.

An Integrative approach to supply chain disruption risk and resilience management: a literature review

Mansoor Shekarian et al.

Summary: This study examines the importance of different practices in enhancing supply chain resilience, finding that collaboration is crucial in dealing with control disruptions, while flexibility is key in addressing demand, supply, process, and environmental disruptions. A framework is developed to identify the appropriate strategies for enhancing resilience to different types of supply chain disruptions.
