Impact of high-speed rail on the operational capacity of conventional rail in China

Junmei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of high-speed rail on freight and conventional passenger rail services, finding that high-speed rail has substitutional effects on conventional passenger rail and promotes the expansion of freight rail capacity. The results provide important implications for transportation planners to optimize operational plans and improve the performance of various rail services.

Competition between high-speed rail and airlines: Considering both passenger and cargo

Dong-ling Cai et al.

Summary: This study builds a model to investigate the competition between air and rail in passenger and cargo markets. It is found that introducing HSR as a competitor in the passenger sector might be detrimental to social welfare if airlines use aircraft belly to transport cargo with limited capacity, but social welfare will always be improved if HSR enters both the passenger and cargo sectors.

Effects of Airline Entry on High-Speed Rail

Chunan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of airline entry on an incumbent high-speed rail operator, finding that airline entry affects the frequency and size of high-speed rail services, and improves social welfare in most cases, albeit with uneven distribution of welfare gains.

High-speed rail pricing: Implications for social welfare

Changmin Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examines the competition between high-speed rail and air transport, as well as the impact of changing the pricing strategy of high-speed rail on social welfare. The findings suggest that fixed pricing for high-speed rail may lead to increased traffic, and transitioning from fixed to variable pricing generally results in higher social welfare, although in certain cases, fixed pricing may still be more beneficial.

Impact of high-speed rail on road traffic and greenhouse gas emissions

Yatang Lin et al.

Summary: The study shows that the construction of new high-speed rail routes in China has a significant impact on reducing road traffic and carbon emissions, primarily through substitution effects. The environmental benefits mainly come from replacing highway goods transport with conventional railways, and it is projected that under greener electricity conditions, high-speed rail in China can contribute even more to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.

Environmental balance of the high speed rail network in Spain: A Life Cycle Assessment approach

Andoni Kortazar et al.

Summary: Spain has the world's second longest high-speed rail network, but not all construction of these lines can be justified in terms of energy savings and emission reductions. Decisions to build new sections should be based on demand analysis, focusing on corridors with high transport demand, and policymakers should consider other transport-related measures to reduce environmental impacts without the burden of building new infrastructures.

Assessing carbon dioxide emissions of high-speed rail: The case of Beijing-Shanghai corridor

Peihong Chen et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the reduction in demand for passenger vehicles can offset a larger share of emissions from the manufacturing of HSR rolling stock, while avoided infrastructure expansion plays a limited role in offsetting CO2 emissions from the construction of an HSR infrastructure. Initially, emissions increased at the operation stage due to too much traffic diversion from ordinary-speed rail to HSR, but eventually, as traffic diverted from road and air increased, the net emissions at the operation stage turned negative.

Air-HSR cooperation: Impacts on service frequency and environment

Mei Jiang et al.

Summary: The study shows that air-high-speed rail cooperation increases flight frequency, air traffic, and the load factor of the airline on long-haul routes. However, the impact of this cooperation on short-haul routes depends on factors such as market size and travel time. While emissions per passenger decrease on long-haul routes, they may not decrease on short-haul routes where the HSR operator interacts with the airline.

The evolution of transport networks and the regional water environment: the case of Chinese high-speed rail

Huanxiu Guo et al.

Summary: The study finds that cities with higher centrality in the HSR network tend to have less industrial water pollution, and skill-intensive and clean industries are more likely to agglomerate in these cities. The evolution of the HSR network is conducive to sustainable regional development.
