Retention of Coagulation Factors and Storage of Freeze-Dried Plasma

Elissa J. Flaumenhaft et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Terumo BCT's TFDP has no negative impact on coagulation factor activity, remains stable for up to 24 months at room and refrigerated temperatures, and has coagulation factor activity comparable to PF24/FFP, with residual moisture content below 2%.

Post-expiry stability of freeze-dried plasma under field conditions - Can shelf life be extended?

Meital Zur et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of uncontrolled field storage conditions on Lyo-Plas N Freeze-Dried Plasma (FDP) up to 24 months post expiry, finding slight changes in safety and efficacy parameters beyond the manufacturer's shelf life. Despite alterations in some clotting factors and other parameters, the study concluded that FDP units stored in uncontrolled conditions remained safe and effective even beyond expiration date, suggesting the possibility of extending shelf life.

A trend of dropping anti-SARS-CoV-2 plaque reduction neutralization test titers over time in Canadian convalescent plasma donors

Steven J. Drews et al.

Summary: This study found that in repeat plasma donations 3-4 months after the onset of COVID-19 symptoms, PRNT50 titers may change, indicating that blood operators cannot assume that SARS-CoV-2 PRNT50 will remain high in repeat plasma donors.

Convalescent plasma for adults with acute COVID-19 respiratory illness (CONCOR-1): updates study protocol for an international, multicentre, randomized, open-label trial

Philippe Begin et al.

Summary: CONCOR-1 is a randomized controlled trial investigating the efficacy and safety of COVID-19 convalescent plasma in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, with the primary outcome being intubation or death at day 30. The trial will also provide information on the role and thresholds of SARS-CoV-2 antibody titres and neutralization assays for donor qualification.

Convalescent plasma for hospitalized patients with COVID-19: an open-label, randomized controlled trial

Philippe Begin et al.

Summary: Convalescent plasma did not reduce the risk of intubation or death at 30 days in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Transfusion of convalescent plasma with unfavorable antibody profiles could be associated with worse clinical outcomes compared to standard care.

Freeze-dried plasma for major trauma - Systematic review and meta-analysis

Garrick Mok et al.

Summary: This review assesses the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of freeze-dried plasma (FDP) in trauma. Results indicate that human studies show no significant difference in mortality and transfusion outcomes between FDP and frozen plasma (FP). Animal studies also demonstrate similar results between FDP and FP in terms of coagulation and anti-inflammatory profiles.

Age of thawed plasma does not affect clinical outcomes or biomarker expression in patients receiving prehospital thawed plasma: a PAMPer secondary analysis

Katherine M. Reitz et al.

Summary: Prehospital plasma administration during air medical transport reduces endotheliopathy of trauma, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and 30-day mortality among traumatically injured patients at risk of hemorrhagic shock. However, age of thawed plasma does not result in clinical outcome or biomarker expression differences in the overall study cohort, but may be associated with biomarker expression differences in severely injured patients. Further investigation is needed to determine the potential impact of thawed plasma age on biomarker expression and clinical outcomes following traumatic injury.
