Propensities of red light running of pedestrians at the two-stage crossings with split pedestrian signal phases

Dianchen Zhu et al.

Summary: Two-stage crossing with a median refuge island is commonly installed at busy urban signalized intersections to accommodate high traffic flow in different directions. This study investigates the safety aspects of these crossings and identifies factors affecting pedestrians' red light running tendencies, with a focus on pedestrians' characteristics, traffic attributes, and environmental factors. Results indicate that factors such as pedestrian signal, waiting time, traffic flow, and situational features significantly affect the red light running behavior at two-stage crossings, with potential implications for pedestrian crossing design and enforcement strategies.

Roles of personal and environmental factors in the red light running propensity of pedestrian: Case study at the urban crosswalks

Dianchen Zhu et al.

Summary: The study examines the factors influencing pedestrians' propensity for red light running through video observation surveys. Results show that factors such as pedestrian gender, age, behavior, presence of companions, number of pedestrians around, presence of other violators, signal time, and traffic volume all play a role in affecting red light running behavior. Interaction effects by gender, age, presence of violators, companions, and traffic volume were also found. The findings can contribute to the development of effective measures to combat red light running violations and enhance pedestrian safety at signalized intersections.
