Presence of toxic metals in rice with human health hazards in Tangail district of Bangladesh

Tapos Kormoker et al.

Summary: The presence of toxic metals in rice grains has become a major public health concern in Bangladesh, where the concentrations of Cr, Pb, As, and Cd in rice samples exceeded the standard values for food samples. The estimated daily intake of these toxic metals from rice also exceeded the allowed maximum tolerable daily intake, and the total targeted hazard quotient values indicated a potential non-carcinogenic risk. The estimated target carcinogenic risk of As indicated an increased risk of cancer for adults and children in the study area.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment for sediments of cavuslu stream in Giresun, Turkey: association between garbage disposal facility and metallic accumulation

Bayram Yuksel et al.

Summary: This paper aimed to investigate the potential accumulation of toxic elements in the surface sediments of cavuslu Stream in Giresun, Turkey, and determine any association between a garbage disposal facility and ecotoxicity or human health risk. Results showed that certain metals in the sediments were above average shale levels, indicating potential toxic responses in benthic organisms. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that anthropogenic pollution, likely from the GDF, played a major role in the metal accumulation in the sediments of the cavuslu Stream.

Summary: Indexical appraisal of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in sediment and fish of riverine ecosystem provides valuable information for environmental management. The study found that most sediment samples were moderately polluted by PTEs, with Zn, Cu, and Co being more concentrated in fish species. The Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) for individual elements was below 1, indicating no significant health hazards from ingesting a single metal from fish species.
