The results of the experiment demonstrated that different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite had varying degrees of toxic effects on third instar larvae of Drosophila, causing tissue damage and DNA damage at higher concentrations, while showing no significant effects at lower concentrations.
Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at a final concentrations of 0.025, 0.050, 0.075 and 0.1 M was mixed in the diet and the third instar larvae were allowed to feed on it for 24 h. The larvae exposed to 0.050, 0.075 and 0.1 M of NaOCl showed a dose-dependent significant increase in the activity of beta-galactosidase, tissue damage, oxidative stress markers, DNA damage and Caspase-3 and 9 activities. Larvae exposed to 0.025 M of NaOCl did not show any toxic effect in the third instar larvae. The NaOCl is toxic at 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1 M in the third instar larvae of transgenic Drosophila melanogaster (hsp70-lacZ) Bg(9).
